Roger Federer, also known as the Federer Express or the Swiss maestro, was born on August 8th, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland to Swiss national Robert Federer and South Africa-born Lynette Du Rand. Robert Federer met Lynette Du Rand Federer during a business trip while they were both working for a pharmaceutical company.

Federer has one sister called Diana who is 2 years older than him. Raised as Roman Catholic, Federer grew up in suburban Münchenstein, a town close to the French-German borders of Switzerland and Federer is fluent in German, Swiss German, French and English. He also speaks some Sweidsh and some Italian. Federer is married to Mirka Vavrinec, his PR manager and another Swiss player who had to quit the sport due to injuries. Federer enjoys sitting on the beach, playing card games and table tennis, is a fan of his hometown soccer team, FC Basel.

Awards

Federer received the 2006 Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of Year award. He was also named 2004-2006-2007 BBC Sports Overseas Personality of Year. Federer was named in Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in World” in the May 14, 2007 issue of the magazine. He is also the recipient of U.S. Academy Outstanding Athlete in 2005-2006 presented by USA Today. Swiss Post Office released a stamp dedicated to Roger Federer on April 10, 2007 in his birthplace of Basel.
